Rocky’s Market and Two Local Girls are coming to Brooklyn Basin! Imagine utilizing a well-curated market as your pantry, collecting what you need for only a day or two at a time. Rocky’s is going to be a contemporary community-oriented place to shop and dine, energizing the Oakland Waterfront.
Let’s take a step back and start at the beginning… The owners of Rocky’s Market – Corinne and Brady were the perfect match from the start, just as Brooklyn Basin and Rocky’s Market are. Meeting on Match.com and having a first date at Bi-Rite Market in San Francisco, these two foodies were meant for markets.
“I love grocery stores!!!” – Brady’s infamous pickup line to Corinne.
The Story of Corinne & Brady…
Gastronomes by nature, Corinne and Brady enjoy checking out other grocery stores and searching for new fun ingredients to craft a meal together. Brady is adventurous in his flavors and excellent in execution. Corrine loves to use fresh herbs, spices and world flavors. They have a pantry filled with interesting ingredients they have collected. Brady lovingly calls her ‘the Mistress of Spices’.
Corinne says her perfect meal with Brady includes spinning an old jazz record on the turntable and a long afternoon to spend talking and gathering fresh meats and produce. As they share a nice glass of wine (organic native yeast fermentation is Corinne’s fave) and hone the craft of cooking together in their kitchen, they’ll serve the meal on one platter with two forks.
Culinary comes naturally to Corinne, having so many memories revolving around crafting and creating new food items with her mother and grandmother. A favorite memory includes 5-year-old Corinne playing restaurant with a neighbor complete with menus and an interesting recipe of a blackberry, graham cracker, and milk! With a strong line of women encouraging experimentation in the kitchen and a love of cooking, Corinne started a catering business after earning a BA in Psychology at UCSB.
The Story of TLG and Rocky’s…
In 2014, Corinne and her good friend Justine decided to put an offer in to buy Rocky’s. Justine is an accomplished chef who ran the kitchen at The Slanted Door and was on Iron Chef. The original owner (Rocky), sold the store to another buyer – but the back part of the store was available for a small café! Corinne and Justine planned to open Two Local Girls together but another opportunity came up for Justine so Corinne opened Two Local Girls, as a solo local girl. Not long after TLG opened, fate would step in and Rocky’s would be offered to Corinne.
Brady and Corinne sealed the deal and started their journey!
Rocky’s Market is coming to Brooklyn Basin…
The new space along the Oakland Waterfront is going to be open and welcoming, specializing in local, organic and sustainability, offering 100% organic produce, sustainable meats and dairy, and a large variety of locally sourced goods. Gluten Free, Dairy Free and Plant Based Diets are all very popular and Rocky’s will do their best to provide people with special dietary needs foods they can enjoy too!
Corinne and Brady wanted to incorporate elements from the history of the 9th Avenue Terminal Building, so they researched at the Oakland Library. Built in the late 1920’s, the building was used to receive goods and cargo from ships. To capture the feel of the hard working blue collar cargo handlers, they incorporated wainscoting detailing and antique commercial kitchen displays paired with a soothing nautical color palette.
Expect your favorites from Alexander Farms and Oakland Dust, plus many smaller labels like Highwire Coffee, Baia Pasta, Cult Cracker, Granola Guru, and so many more!
Don’t forget the Two Local Girls Kitchen…
The TLG Kitchen will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They will be offering local, organic, and sustainable foods prepared off the hot line. Local specialties will include seasonal crab, smoked Baby Back ribs, and roasted chickens, as well as an array of seasonal small plates. Order a small plate or two from the TLG Kitchen or take home a Two Local Girls “take & bake” meal, prepared on site. You can even order a glass of wine or beer and walk around with it while you shop!
What can Orion residents anticipate from their local grocer? “First and foremost, when people walk into Rocky’s they can look forward to someone greeting them by name, asking if they need any help, asking them how their day went. We believe that feeding ourselves is a fundamentally intimate act and we believe that the old school personal touch in a grocery store is something that will never go out of style.
The second thing they can expect is that we’ll listen. This is a whole new world for all of us. Of course, we’ll come down there with our vision of how we want to do things, but we’re also going to listen and build the neighborhood all together around our community market.
The third thing is easy. They’re going to have some great food just across the street”, said Corinne.
