We’re featuring an Oakland waterfront neighbor, Brotzeit Lokal, located at 1000 Embarcadero – next to our Brooklyn Basin neighborhood and mere minutes away. Boasting a distinct Oakland flare, this Bavarian-inspired restaurant and biergarten has been serving up locally-sourced, house-made menu items since June of 2013. We were able to get the inside scoop on popular dishes and best seat in the house!
Brotzeit Lokal is family owned and was inspired by the inviting, relaxing and family-friendly atmospheres of the biergartens in Germany. “Brotzeit” is the German word for “snack” and refers to the Bavarian custom of taking a break and having a beer. In Germany, Lokal is a word for a pub. Brotzeit Lokal is right on the water in the “Oakland Riviera”, at the foot of 10th Avenue along the Bay Trail. Built from scratch with their own life savings and the help of close friends and family members.
Did you know? Brotzeit Lokal has a guest dock for boaters, bike parking, is dog-friendly, has Tuesday Trivia, and Wine Wednesday!
Brotzeit Lokal serves up fresh, locally-sourced, house-made food. The food is simple, based on traditional Bavarian fare, taking advantage of the Bay Area’s immense culinary bounty and unique farm-to-table aesthetic. They offer a variety of house-made sausages and condiments, including sauerkraut, mustards and seasonal pickles. As well as a variety of other sandwiches, platters and snacks.
Q: What is your most ordered item?
A: “Our house-made sausages are by far the most ordered items. The most popular are the Bratwurst and the Wurzige (spicy Bratwurst). We also have Wiesswurst, Nurnbergers and always a special game sausage. And the giant soft German pretzels are definitely a customer favorite.”
Q: What should I order for lunch, dinner and brunch?
A: “Our menu is seasonal, but some of our most popular dishes include:
Lunch: Fish and Chips and the Lokal Burger
Dinner: Weinerschitzel, goulasch and suaerbraten
Brunch: Eggs benedict and the Bloody Mary (or get my favorite the Bloody Maria)”
“Be sure to order the schweinshaxe, whole braised pork shank or one of the large family platters for a big group.” – Brotzeit Lokal
Brotzeit Lokal also features a unique and well-stocked, rotating craft beer selection, focusing on small German and Austrian family breweries, monastery microbrews and hard to find German beers. Need more options? They carry several local brews, including California pale ale, IPA and Stout. And, they offer several Belgian beers as well, including white ale, triples and sours.
Happy Hour is 3-6pm each Tuesday-Friday with beer, wine and cocktail specials + a happy hour food menu. Stop by on Wine Wednesday and get half off all bottles! During Sunday brunch, get Sunday Mas ($10 Liter steins of beer).
Q: Where is the best seat in the house to take in the view?
A: “Every seat has a view. But the most popular place to be is outdoors in the biergarten.” Oakland Marina is adjacent to the restaurant and guest berthing is available to patrons while dining. Views of the Estuary, Coast Guard Island and Alameda are fantastic from every table in the restaurant and even better outside in the Biergarten.
Q: Best part of your Oakland waterfront location?
A: “Being by the water is really beautiful and our particular location has been both challenging and special. It’s a beautiful place to work everyday and we love sharing it with our customers that come land and by water. We have a guest dock that boaters can park at while they dine. Whether you have a 36 foot yacht, a kayak or a stand-up paddle-board, there’s a spot to park.”
Q: How would you describe the neighborhood in 3 words?
A: Diverse. Changing. Hidden gem.
