Township Commons, our first community park in the neighborhood, just steps from Orion Apartments, is ready to open this spring. You could even say it’s our front yard. In time, Brooklyn Basin’s coastal character will come alive with 30 acres of public parks lining the waterfront. Along with the revival of Estuary Park, five new parks will each have their own distinct features and water views, offering playgrounds and ample green space, as well as areas for open-air markets, concerts and festivals.
Township Commons waterfront park is the first of the five parks to be constructed within our neighborhood at Brooklyn Basin. The park was created as a grand civic center to welcome all waterfront fun from impromptu daily interactions to larger celebrations, concerts and water festivals for all to enjoy along the Oakland waterfront. Township Commons is situated along the Oakland Estuary at the southern edge of Brooklyn Basin. This stretch of shoreline at Township Commons waterfront park provides opportunity for everything from morning coffee to afternoon playtime.
Elements of the historic Oakland terminal building have been preserved to provide a memory of the industrial history that once made up the waterfront. These historic artifacts have been integrated and overlaid with new planting, lighting, and other elements that combine to provide a unique infrastructure for the new park.
Historic loading dock locations have been re-imagined as the new grand entrance to Township Commons, thanks to some beautiful work by our friends at Volume Inc., hand painted by the pros at New Bohemia Signs, SF and landscape design by Einwiller Kuehl. Painted loading dock numbers were added to Township Commons, giving the park shoreline graphics. Einwiller Kuehl also added unique lounging furniture, a newly sodded hill and architectural hill truss.
Approximately half the site was formerly the 9th Avenue terminal. The original columns and trusses from the 9th Avenue Terminal Building create interesting spatial experiences and preserve a portion of our Oakland waterfront history.
Watch for opening announcements of the first Brooklyn Basin retailers and public park! Soon you’ll be able to visit Rocky’s Market for some Two Local Girls take-out and plan a picnic at Township Commons or enjoy a shop plus paddlesport adventure with California Canoe & Kayak.
Waterfront access is at the heart of Brooklyn Basin’s design. Parks along the Estuary will be linked by a pedestrian and bike path system that connects Jack London Square with Oakland’s eastern waterfront. Brooklyn Basin will also eventually connect to Lake Merritt via bike, transit and pedestrian pathways. The new neighborhood marina will have space for over 200 slips, accommodating everything from yachts and sailboats to kayaks.
